United Kingdom Visas
Just as people coming to work in Australia and New Zealand require prior government permission or visas to enter and work here, the same applies for those wishing to work in the UK
There are 4 main types of visas for the UK.
1. The Youth Mobility Visa
For those under the age of 31 who possess either an Australian or New Zealand passport. This visa allows you to enter the UK for a period of 2 years and undertake employment for the entire time. The visa is flexible and allows you to undertake locum work, travel around the UK and leave the UK for travels in Europe or further a field and then return to the UK for more work.
2. Ancestry Visa
This visa is for those with recent UK Ancestry. It will allow you to enter and work in the UK in any capacity for up to 5 years.
You will qualify for this visa if you can show that:
- you are a Commonwealth citizen
- you are aged 17 or over
- you have a grandparent who was born in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Mann
- you have a grandparent that was born in what is now the Republic of Ireland prior to 31 March 1922 (see note below)
- you are able to work and intend to do so in the UK
- you can support yourself and any dependants, and live without needing any help from public funds
This visa is also renewable and it allows you to take with you your spouse, children under the age of 18 years and eligible partner.
3. Employer Visa Sponsorship
For those who do not meet the criteria for a Youth Mobility Visa or Ancestry Visa there is an option of visa sponsorship to the UK. Employer visa sponsorship is not as common as it used to be but is still possible for some professions and issuance is very dependent on geographic location of employment in the UK and whether the role cannot be filled by a local UK or EU applicant first. Applicants who wish to apply for a visa sponsor to the UK need to be very flexible.
4. Highly Skilled Migrant Permit
The highly skilled migrant visa has been popular in recent times for professionals heading to the UK. However, recent immigration and visa rules in the UK introduced on the 1st April 2009 now only has this visa open to those professionals who hold a Masters Degree in their chosen field.
